One of the main health indicators is the urine. Doctors recommend regular laboratory checkups in order to determine your health condition based on the color, odor and consistency of your urine.

Urine is mostly composed of water, urea, sodium, chloride, potassium, creatinine and other organic and inorganic components. If there is an imbalance in your body, its color, odor and consistency will change.

If your urine has transparent yellow color it means that you are healthy; your organism is properly hydrated and the function of your kidneys is normal.

The higher the fluid intake, the clearer the urine will look. When you drink less water, the color of the urine becomes more concentrated due to dehydration.

However, if you notice any unusual colors, it could be a sign of a certain health problem.

1. Murky and cloudy urine

If you suffer from kidney stones or urinary tract infection, your urine will be murky or cloudy. This condition requires suitable medical treatment, especially if you experience symptoms like frequent need to pee along with burning sensation or pain. So, make sure you avoid self-medication.

2. Milky, white urine

If you have noticed that your urine is milky or white it is probably due to excess amounts of minerals like phosphorus and calcium in your body.

3. Fizzing and foaming urine

This is a sign of either excess protein in your nutrition or a kidney disease. If this situation persists seek medical help as soon as possible.

4. Red urine

Pink or red urine can be caused by numerous reasons. For example, foods like rhubarb, beets, carrots and blackberries can give your urine a pinkish-red color. If this is the reason for the red color, don’t worry, since the urine will get back its normal color within a day.

Some medications can also trigger the reddish color. However, if this condition persists, then the reason might be more serious. Red urine can be also caused by presence of blood which appears as a result of kidney stones, prostate issues, mercury poisoning and even tumors in the kidneys or bladder.

5. Orange urine

Light orange shade in your urine doesn’t indicate serious problem. This could imply that you have mild dehydration.

Other causes may include: high intake of foods rich in beta-carotene and certain medications or supplements like vitamin B-complex.

However, a fluorescent orange color indicates health problems with your bile ducts or liver, including liver inflammation, abnormalities of the liver cells and obstruction of the bile ducts. These conditions increase the levels of bilirubin, which in turn gives the urine an orange color.

These health issues are linked to jaundice, so apart from orange urine you may also experience yellow eyes or skin. If you have all these symptoms, seek immediate medical help.

6. Brown urine

Certain health problems, some medications and foods may give your urine dark brown color. For example, high intake of Aloe Vera or fava beans and drugs like laxatives, antimalarial medications and muscle relaxants. Another reason for ithe brown color of the urine may be a rare disease, known as rhabdomyolysis which appears as a result of a muscle injury.

Other reasons may include: liver diseases, kidney disorders and even cancer. Sometimes, brown urine may be triggered by porphyria, an inherited red blood cell disorder.

7. Green urine

The excessive consumption of veggies may give your urine a green color. In some cases, it may be caused by proteus infection, a specific form of urinary tract infection. If you haven’t eaten any veggies, but your urine is still green, ensure you seek medical health.

8. Blue urine

Hypercalcemia, a condition which involves excess amounts of calcium in your bones, may give your urine a blue color.

Nevertheless, the color is not the only thing you should pay attention to. The smell of your urine is also an important indicator of your health:

• Musty smell – caused by certain metabolic disorders.

• Foul smell – appears due to urinary tract infections. This symptom appears along with back pain and burning sensations during urination.

• Sweet smell – indicates liver disease or diabetes.
