Nowadays, everyone is familiar with the harmful effects of sugar. It increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular issues and even cancer. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to reduce the intake of sugar as much as possible so that you can prevent the development of numerous chronic diseases.

Unfortunately, sugar causes addiction so cutting down on it is a bit difficult. Sugar cravings are uncontrollable desires for sugary foods which cause weight gain and affect the overall health.

According to some theories, they are caused by some health conditions such as bacterial overgrowth, parasites, Candida, food allergies, hormone changes in women and adrenal fatigue.

Luckily, there are certain types of foods which can help you to reduce and overcome your sugar cravings:

1. Protein

Replacing sugary foods with protein will balance the levels of blood sugar in your organism. Meals rich in proteins slow down the absorption of sugar in the body, which in turn prevents the rise of glucose and reduces the sugar cravings. You can try kefir, yogurt, lentils and black beans.

2. Fiber

Foods abundant in fiber can lower the blood sugar levels in your body, reduce the cravings and make you feel satiated for longer. They can also encourage the digestion process. Try carrots, flaxseeds, nuts and berries.

3. Spirulina

Spirulina contains tyrosine – amino acid which encourages the brain to produce dopamine, norepinephrine and other neurotransmitters which prevent the sugar cravings. Apart from spirulina, there are many other ingredients that are rich in tyrosine, such as sesame seeds, eggs, milk and cheese.

4. Drink a lot of water

Sometimes sugar cravings signify that your body is dehydrated. Therefore, ensure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. In case you are not used to drinking too much water, you can add lemon juice or a few drops of stevia to make it taste better.

5. Healthy fats

The transition to a diet low in sugars will be easier if you start consuming healthy fats. They will also provide more energy for your body and reduce the cravings for sugar. Make sure you include green leafy veggies, avocados, seeds and nuts and coconut oil into your daily diet.

6. Sea vegetables

They are abundant in minerals and vitamins which will restore your body. Sugars deplete the minerals from your organism, so a portion of sea vegetables will supply your daily needs for minerals and reduce the cravings for sugar.

7. Probiotics

If you suffer from yeast infection, such as Candida, you should remove sugar from your diet, since yeasts feed on it. You know that Candida triggers many health issues, including skin problems, recurring infections and weight gain.

To eliminate Candida and to promote your gut health make sure you increase the intake of foods rich in probiotics, such as, apple cider vinegar, kefir, kombucha and Greek yogurt.

8. Sour foods

Every time you feel the urge to eat something sweet, take fermented or sour food and the craving will stop. Sour foods are high in organic acids which destroy the harmful bacteria and support your microbiome. Try some fermented foods such as kimchi and sauerkraut.

9. Smoothies

Plant-based smoothies are loaded with vegetables and fruits which can reduce your sugar cravings. What’s more, smoothies are great for boosting the function of the digestive system. They also speed up the metabolism and provide nutrients for the whole body.

10. Spices and herbs

Some spices and herbs such as turmeric or ginger have anti-inflammatory properties and they are also known to prevent insulin resistance – the main reason for type 2-diabetes. They can also improve your overall health and reduce the sugar cravings.

11. Prevent extreme hunger

Many people experience cravings as a result of hunger. Make sure you eat often and have healthy snacks as well. By avoiding long periods of hunger you may prevent the sugar cravings.

12. Reduce stress

Stress may also induce craving behavior, especially in women. It also increases the levels of the stress hormone – cortisol in the blood, which is responsible for the food craving and gaining weight. Therefore, it is important to incorporate some meditating techniques or other methods which can help you to fight stress.
